How to Connect a Pedestal Sink to the Drain Pipe

Making drainpipe connections under the sink can involve working in cramped quarters, especially if you are installing a pedestal sink. A pedestal sink has little room between the back of the pedestal and the stubout or the drainpipe that comes out of the bathroom wall. You must position yourself where you can see the pipes and the sinks drain, as well as work with pliers in the cramped quarters. Not performing the installation correctly leads to flooding later, so you need to ensure the drainpipe connections are secure as part of the installation.

Instructions

Wrap pipe tape clockwise around the tailpiece pipe. Thread the pipe clockwise into the underside of the sinks drain connection, tightening the connection with a pipe wrench.

Apply pipe tape to the threads on the trap pipe piece and then tighten the trap pipe piece onto the bottom of the sinks tailpiece. Thread a trap arm onto the open end of the trap and connect the other end of the tap arm to the stubout pipe in the wall.

Undo the connection between the trap and trap arm if the trap arm does not fit correctly. Cut the excess portion of the trap arm with a hacksaw. Wrap pipe tape around the ends of the trap arm.

Insert an extra-deep escutcheon piece onto the end of the trap arm. Replace the trap arm piece onto the trap and the stubout, tightening the connections. Slide the escutcheon so it touches the wall and covers the connection with the stubout.

Run the sinks faucet for at least two minutes and watch the drainpipes for leaks. Turn any leaking connections slip joint nut a quarter turn with a pair of slip joint pliers until the leaking stops.
