How to Make a Sink Out of a Washstand

Washstand sinks add a touch of elegant and vintage country charm to your bathroom. These converted sinks can be made out of nearly any old washstand or dresser with a few modifications. When selecting the washstand to convert, ensure that its surface is wide enough and sturdy enough to accommodate the drop-in wash basin and countertop before purchasing it.

Instructions

Remove the drawers from the washstand to make it easier to modify it.

Locate the plumbing rig. These pipes may come from the floor or wall. Measure the distance from the wall or floor to end of the pipes. Draw a rectangle that is large enough to accommodate these measurements onto the bottom or back of the washstand and cut it out with the jigsaw.

Punch or cut out the bottom of the drawers with the jigsaw to remove them. Leave the sides of the drawers so that they can slide back into the washstand, but remove the bottom to accommodate the sink plumbing. Slide the drawers back into place.

Drill screws into each side of each drawer from the back of the washstand to secure them in place. These drawers must stay in place to prevent damage to the plumbing.

Place the drop-in sink template on the top of the washstand and trace around it. Cut out the opening for the sink basing using the jigsaw. Begin by cutting the opening too small, then enlarging it as necessary to accommodate the basin.

Sand all the rough edges of the washstand basin created by cutting, then coat the basin with a wood sealant. Allow the sealant to dry as per the manufacturer's instructions.

Place the countertop on the top of the washstand and set it in place using caulking, or drop the sink basin directly into the hole that you cut in the stand. Attach the sink to the countertop or washstand using the installation hardware included in the kit. Caulk around all exposed holes to prevent water leakage. Allow the caulk to dry thoroughly.

Place the new sink in position so that the pipes are fed through the hole you cut in the back or bottom of the stand. Attach the faucet hardware to the washstand and plumbing as per the manufacturer's instructions.
