Concrete Coatings for Showers

Concrete coatings for showers can provide an alternative to more traditional tile finishes. The coatings produced for these showers mimic the feel, look and texture of actual concrete to provide a no slip surface that can be both decorative and functional.

Various types of concrete coatings exist and these can be used in showers or on other surfaces where moisture may be present. Pool decks, sidewalks and other outdoor areas may be coated with a concrete surface. Showers and other surfaces can be coated in a variety of different ways. In cases where no concrete coating already exists, the concrete surfacing material is generally applied with trowel to create the appropriate texture. In cases where a concrete surface may already exist, a spray on concrete coating may be applied.

Concrete shower coatings generally need to be sealed in some way in order to preserve the coating. Although the coatings tend to be durable, they are not usually waterproof in and of themselves and will break down over time because of water's tendency to work as a solvent. Some contractors use waterproof epoxy sealants because they are not only water-resistant, but also durable and easy to apply with a roller.

The amount of time it takes to apply a concrete shower coating is one of the positive features that make these an attractive option for someone wanting to redo the bathroom. In many cases, the area that is coated can be reused again within about 24 to 48 hours, depending upon the type of coating and sealer used. This includes the amount of time it takes to clean the surface, prime it and apply both the coating and sealant.

Another appealing feature of a concrete shower coating is that it can be decorated in just about any manner you want. Many companies have developed decorative concrete stamps or stains that can be used to match and complement the decor of your bathroom. Because of the relative ease of application of these types of products, changing the look of your shower on a periodic basis is also possible.
