How to Redo a Bathroom in One to Two Days

A bathroom remodel is often a long, involved process, but it is possible to tackle the makeover in a weekend. The key to a quick bathroom remodel is choosing materials that are quick to install and don't need a lot of drying or waiting time. You may also have to cut back or compromise on the specific components you want to remodel.

The planning phase is critical in a quick bathroom makeover. You need to know exactly what you are changing, the materials needed to do the change, how long each step takes and what order you'll complete the changes. If you want the makeover completed in one or two days, the best option is to leave all of the fixtures in the same spot. Moving the toilet, sink or tub means extensive plumbing work that will likely extend your remodel timeline.

Once you have your plan in place, you need to handle as much prep work as possible to make the remodel itself go quickly. Take all necessary measurements in the room for things like flooring or a new shower surround. Calculate the amount of all supplies needed for the remodel, such as flooring, paint, adhesive and nails or screws. Purchase all of these items and sort them out by project so you know exactly where everything is located when you need it. If possible, tackle the demolition the night before you actually start the remodel. This allows you to start with a clean slate and saves time so you are able to begin work right away.

Establishing the timeline is key in fitting in all of the projects in a short period of time. Painting your walls first eliminates the need to put down drop cloths as long as you're replacing the floor. If you are replacing the flooring, you'll need to pull up the toilet and possibly the vanity first. Put down the new flooring so you are able to put the fixtures back into place. If you're replacing the toilet or vanity, this is the time to install them. For a bathtub replacement, place the tub first and then install a new surround. Lighting fixtures, towel bars and other easy-to-install items are typically last.

A solid panel-style shower surround saves you time on installation because you place it in a few large panels. Individual tiles on the surround take longer to set into place. They also require drying time for the mortar and a second round of work when you grout the joints. For the same reason, a vinyl floor or laminate wood flooring is better than tile if you're on a strict timeline. A quick floor is essential so you are able to move on to other components. Instead of completely redoing all areas of the bathroom, make a few key changes to save time. For example, instead of replacing the entire vanity, replace just the vanity top and the faucet to give it a new look. Hire a professional for complicated work that could slow you down, such as plumbing or electrical work in the bathroom. You save time and ensure the project is done correctly.
