How to Install a Tub With a Mortar Bed

Tubs can be installed in a variety of ways, but most of them utilize some form of padding underneath the base of the tub to support it over the years and help it withstand the weight of water plus a person. Foam is a common method, but you can also use drywall mud if you have extra laying around after the walls are finished off. However, one of the strongest methods to ensure the longevity of your tub is to install the tub on a base of mortar, such as what is used with tile installations or brick and block.

Instructions

Move all of your materials into the bathroom so you can have everything close at hand. If you are working in an existing home, cover your work area with a layer of plastic sheeting. Cut some felt paper to fit the tub installation area and lay it down on the floor. Cut some chicken wire to fit the same space with the tin snips and hammer tack it and the paper to the floor.

Set up your wheelbarrow next to the tub and fill it with the concrete mortar mix. Add water according to the manufacturers instructions. Mix the mortar with a shovel. Take your time and work the mortar mixture by turning shovelfuls of the mortar in the wheelbarrow. After you have finished mixing the mortal, shovel it into the tub installation area on top of the felt and wire.

Cut some plastic sheeting and layer the top of the concrete mortar mixture. Maneuver the tub into place on top of the mortar. Fill the tub with water, either through a hose from the outside or by temporarily using the water pipes for the tub, until it is almost full. Let the tub sit for a few days while the mortar cures and then connect the various pipes with the wrenches, screw the tub in place to the studs on the wall with the drill and screws and drain the tub.
