How to Frame a Half Wall Between the Shower and Bathtub

Installing a wall between the shower and bathtub provides privacy while visually separating the areas. Framing the wall consists of building the wooden framework for the wall. Finishing the wall is a separate process that depends on the design of your bathroom and your building expertise. Though you are building a half wall and it does not need to be as strong as a load-bearing wall, you will still need to create a long-lasting frame to support the finished walls.

Instructions

Saw two 2-by-4 boards to the desired length for the half wall for the top and bottom plates of the wall.

Trim five 2-by-4 boards for each stud of the half wall to the desired height of the wall, usually between 30 and 40 inches.

Cut two 2-by-4 boards to fit between the studs in the existing wall to create nailing blocks to attach the half wall to the existing wall.

Attach the two nailing blocks between the studs where the top of the half wall will be and halfway down the height of the half wall. For instance, if your half wall will be 40 inches high, install one nail block at 40 inches and a second at 20 inches.

Draw a chalk outline on the floor where you will install the half wall. Use the measuring tape for accuracy. Lay the bottom plate along the chalk line.

Attach the bottom plate to the subflooring with masonry screws drilled into the concrete.

Use nails to attach the end of the bottom plate of the half wall to the bottom plate in the existing wall.

Nail a stud at either end of the bottom plate. Insert two nails at angles to each other from opposite sides of the stud for each joint.

Attach the half wall stud next to the existing wall to the nailing blocks. Attach the top plate to the two studs with two nails in each stud angled into the top plate.

Insert the remaining studs between the top and bottom plate, spacing them 12 to 16 inches apart. Nail a second stud directly against the stud at the far end of the half wall for additional strength.

Apply a waterproof finish to the wall as desired.
