How to Blend Drywall to a Shower

Generally speaking, drywall does not have the ideal properties for a bathroom. Since drywall has a highly porous nature, the drywall absorbs moisture from the air, which causes the wall material to deteriorate. You must use green board drywall or cement backer board in bathrooms for this reason. Either of these wall sheeting options provides a water-resistant surface that holds up in the moist conditions, and that you may blend to a showers walls.

Instructions

Mark the ceiling above the section of the wall where you want to place drywall just above each stud in the wall structure. Start at one side of the wall space and lay a panel of green board or cement backer board, using the marks that you made on the ceiling to secure the panels to the studs with galvanized screws every 6 inches down the studs. Install enough panels side by side to cover the entire wall space.

Install the surface materials -- such as tile or a fiberglass -- to the shower. Use thinset mortar and grout for tile installation, or silicone adhesive for fiberglass installation.

Use the connectors provided with a fiberglass shower enclosure or fiberglass shower panels between the sides of the fiberglass shower and the drywall that touches it if connectors were provided. Line the space between the sides of the shower and the drywall with the adhesive, such as silicone adhesive, recommended by the manufacturer of the fiberglass enclosure; press the connectors into place.

Apply silicone caulk between tiles and any other types of shower materials and drywall. Squeeze a line of silicone caulk in as continuous a strip as possible into the seam between the materials. Use a wet finger to press the silicone caulk fully down into the space between the shower and drywall and apply a second layer of the caulk if necessary to fill the entire space so that the caulk sits even with the wall surface.
