How to Install Bathroom Tile for a Corner Soap Dish

Corner soap dishes in a shower are a fantastic way of adding a little extra storage space in an unobtrusive manner. By utilizing the corner, you create a much larger soap dish, without taking up too much space in the shower's standing area. Ceramic soap dishes can be installed at the same time as the rest of the tiles, provided the tiles are laid out to leave a gap for the dish ahead of time.

Instructions

Measure the shower walls where the tile and soap dish will be installed. Mark off an area of the same size and shape on the floor nearby. Lay out the tiles on the floor to determine the pattern of how they will be installed.

Place the soap dish at the "corner" where the tiles meet. Lay the dish right on top of the tiles to determine how many tiles need to be removed and how many need to be cut to leave a gap to fit it. Use a tile wet saw to cut the tiles to fit around the soap dish and the rest of the installation.

Begin installing the wall tiles in the same pattern determined on the floor. Spread mortar onto the walls using a trowel, and press the tiles into place, leaving a gap where the soap dish will go. Allow them to dry overnight.

Spread additional mortar onto the back of the soap dish, and press it into the wall between the tiles in the gap left for it. Until the mortar dries, temporarily secure the soap dish in place with masking tape.

Grout the wall tiles by spreading grout over them with a grout float. Grout right up to the tiles surrounding the soap dish, but do not grout the soap dish into place. Clean the excess grout off the tiles with a grout sponge.

Squeeze a thin line of silicone caulk adhesive around the soap dish into the gap left between the soap dish and the tiles. Allow the grout and caulk to dry for 24 hours.
