How to Level Shower Pan Mortar

A shower pan is a sloped pan that guides water into the central shower drain. If the shower pan mortar is not sufficiently leveled, it will not operate properly, resulting in water pooling on the lower end of the shower pan. Ensuring level mortar in a shower pan is a relatively straightforward process, and requires that the surface beneath the pan also be level.

Instructions

    1

Determine where to place the shower pan so that it properly channels the water into the drain. Place the pan on the bathroom floor in the desired position.

    2

Use a bubble level to determine whether the pan is flush to the floor. If the floor is uneven, insert shims on either side of the pan. Check the pan again with the level to ensure it is even.

    3

Use a tape measure to measure the depth and width of the pan. Copy these measurements onto a sufficient number of 2-by-4-inch boards to surround the pan. Cut the boards along your measurements with a circular saw.

    4

Position the boards around the pan in order to form a frame. Hammer the boards to each other with a hammer and wood nails. Remove the pan and set it aside.

    5

Combine mortar mix and water, according to the mortar manufacturers instructions, in a bucket. Once fully combined, pour the mortar into the frame up to the height of the pan.

    6

Insert the pan into the mortar. Push the pan down until you feel it press against the shims. Using one end of the straightedge, slide it across the top of the mortar to remove or carve away any high points in the mortar. Allow the mortar to dry, based on the mortar manufacturers recommended drying time.
