How to Mortar Stepping Stones in the Shower

Written By video massa on Sabtu, 16 November 2013 | 05.39

Nearly any water-resistant material, such as glass or ceramic tiles, fiberglass or stone serves as an effective covering for a shower floor. When installing individual pieces, like stepping stones, on a shower floor, first create a mortar bed into which to install the pieces. This mortar bed serves as adhesive to the stepping stones, keeping them in place on the shower floor.

Instructions

    1

Lay the stepping stones out in the pattern that you like in the shower. Make sure stones dont overlap or directly touch. Leave at least 1/8-inch of space between the edges of stones.

    2

Lift the stones from the back half of the shower. Place them outside of the shower in the same pattern that you used inside the shower.

    3

Spread an even layer of thin-set mortar over the back half of the shower floor. Lay the stones into place in the mortar using the same pattern that you used before.

    4

Remove the stones at the front half of the shower from the shower floor. Spread thin-set mortar over the surface of the shower floor and place the stones back into their original positions.

    5

Give the mortar in the shower at least 24 hours to dry. Use a flat trowel to apply grout over the tops of the stepping stones. Make sure grout fills all of the spaces around and between the stones until the grout sits level with the surfaces of the stepping stones.

    6

Allow the grout to dry for 24 hours. Apply caulk at the sides of the shower floor where the stones and grout meet the wall. Brush waterproof sealer over the entire shower floor, including the stones, caulk and grout, to waterproof the surface.
