Galvanized Stock Tank Bathtub Ideas

Galvanized stock tanks have taken their ranks among the thrifty-chic in bathroom and outdoor tub fixtures alike. Costing $200 or less, you can settle down to soak in one of these perfectly sized tubs. Although it is possible to simply buy one and fill it with water on the front lawn, they are also easily incorporated into civilized decor with a few minor modifications that make them both luxurious and aesthetically pleasing.

A few of the modifications that can be done to a galvanized stock tank include insulating the outside of the tub, as well as the addition of a drain in the bottom of the tank. While stock tanks sold as livestock water troughs are equipped with a drain hole, this is usually set an inch or so up the side and is kept plugged with a cap that requires the use of a socket wrench to remove. It is not easily accessed. Drilling or cutting a hole in the bottom to size for a drain stop is the perfect solution.

It is possible to set the tank outdoors in the open where draining 100 gallons of water might not be an issue, or you can plumb the tank. Plumbing is simple to accomplish. If placing the tank indoors, you might be able to simply hook it into the existing tub plumbing with little fuss. Outdoor setups might be a little more complicated, including building a platform to raise and support the tub so that a drain pipe can be attached underneath, and water can be safely piped away as it drains from the tank.

Many stock tanks are being used as hot tubs, and the water is heated using a wood-fired heater. In order to heat the water and keep it warm in the galvanized steel tank, insulate the outside of the tank. Insulation cannot be left exposed to the elements, so build a wooden cabinet around the insulated tank to solve the problem.

Stock tanks are about 2 feet deep, the perfect shoulder-depth for a good sit-down soak. Your standard bathtub is only around 16 inches deep. The edge of the galvanized tank is rolled around the top, providing a comfortable neck and arm rest. They are usually available in capacity from 40 gallons up to 200 gallons and are easy to maintain as there are no mechanical or moving parts. The smooth sides and bottom also make cleaning a breeze, as it can be drained just like a bathtub for cleaning.
