How to Hang Towels on the Back of the Bathroom Door

If you are pressed for space on the walls of your bathroom, make the most of the space you have available by hanging a towel rack on the back of the door. You will gain room for your towels, free up wall space in your bathroom, and if you choose the right one, give your bathroom an integrated look and feel.

Instructions

Assess the condition and quality of your door to make sure it is strong enough to accommodate a towel rack. The doors in new houses often are not thick enough, or strong enough, to withstand the weight of a towel bar full of wet towels.

Close your bathroom door and determine the best spot on the door to hang your towel rack. Mark that spot on the door with a pencil or a piece of masking tape. Also check the depth of the door to make sure that the towel rack will not hit anything else on the wall. Buy a towel rack with a width less than the space you have available.

Choose your towel rack based on the overall decor and color scheme of your bathroom. Choose a color and a style that works well with the rest of the room.

Remove the bracing plates from the towel bar packaging. The towel bar uses two bracing plates to keep it in place.

Note the length of the towel bar as listed on the packaging. Place your tape measure on the pencil mark or masking tape from the earlier step, then measure half the length of the towel bar. For instance, if you have an 18-inch towel bar, measure 9 inches to the left of the mark and 9 inches to the right. Mark each spot; this is where you will mount the bracing plates.

Hold the bracing plate up against the spot you marked. Use a cordless drill to create a drill hole to mount the plate. Place the screw through the hole in the bracing plate, then attach it with a screwdriver.

Take the other brace plate and hold it up against the mark on the other side. Start a drill hole, then use a screwdriver to mount the brace plate. Mount the towel bar in the bracing plates and hang your bathroom towels.
