How to Install a Kohler Bathtub

In 1883, the Kohler company entered the plumbing industry. The company's first enameled bathtub was originally sold as a horse trough and hog scalder, with a secondary use for bathing. From there, the plumbing division of Kohler has grown, and it is well respected for the quality of its products. Most of its plumbing line is available at home improvement stores, as well as straight from the company. Installing a Kohler bathtub will take less than a day when completed by a handy homeowner.

Instructions

Check the subfloor that the tub rests on. This flooring has to be strong enough to hold the tub when it is dry, full of water and has a person in it. The rough-in installation manual included with your tub has the guidelines for the subfloor. Use the level to ensure the subfloor is level.

Check the water lines that supply water to the tub. If these lines are corroded or leaking, now is the time to replace them while you have easy access.

Attach the tub drain to the outside of the tub. Tighten the pipe nuts with your hands. It is better to not use a pipe wrench on these fittings, as over-tightening can cause the pipes to break.

Lay a thick amount of construction adhesive on the feet of the tub. Set the tub and drain assembly into the tub area, lining up the tub drain with the drain in the subfloor. Use the level to ensure the tub is level. Connect the tub drain to the drain pipe.

Use the drill and the supplied screws to attach the tub to the wall studs. Drill the screws through the flange on the tub and into the wall studs. The flange is a lip that raises up from the outer edge of the tub and rests against the studs.

Install the desired wall treatment. If you are putting in a tile surround, use a cement backer board that resists both water and mold. You also have the option of putting in a tub surround. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for whatever wall treatment you choose. Once the walls are installed, you can put the faucet into place.
